2.  Complete the following sentences.

(i)  An ant is the smallest, the commonest and the wisest insect.

(ii)  We know  a number of facts about an ant’s life because people have kept ants as pets, and have watched their daily behaviour closely.

Answer these questions:

1.  How  long does it take for a grub to become a complete  ant?

Ans-  It takes about five to six weeks for a grub to become a complete ant.

2.  Why do the worker ants carry the grubs about?

Ans-  Workers ants carry the grubs daily for airing, exercise and sunshine. They also feed and clean them.

3.   What jobs are new ants trained for?

Ans-  New ants are trained for their duties as workers, soldiers, builders, cleaners etc.

4.   Name some other creatures that live in anthills.

Ans- Other creatures that live in anthills are beetles, lesser breeds of ants and the greenfly.

3.   In what ways is an ant’s life peaceful?

Ans- Each anthill has hundreds of little rooms and passages. Queen ant lays eggs in some rooms. Some rooms are nurseries for the young ones. Soldiers have separate barracks. Some rooms  serve as storehouses for this  food. Workers have  their reserved quarters.

No worker has ever tried to live in  a soldier’s  house;  no soldier  has ever gone out searching for food. No worker or soldier or cleaner has ever harmed a grub.  Therefore, we can see that an ant’s  life is very peaceful. Each does its share of work  intelligently and bravely,  and never fights with other members of the group.

5.  Mention  three things we can learn from the ‘tiny teacher’. Give reasons for choosing these items.

Ans-  We can learn below things from the ‘tiny teacher’:

Sense of duty and discipline- There are separate rooms for laying eggs, nurseries, soldiers and workers in an anthill. No worker has ever tried to live in  a soldier’s  house;  no soldier  has ever gone out searching for food. No worker or soldier or cleaner has ever harmed a grub.

Care for the young ones- Workers ants feed and clean young ones, and also carry  them  about daily for airing, exercise and sunshine.

Living in haronmy with other creatures - An anthill is a home not only for ants  but  also for some other creatures like beetles, lesser breeds of ants and the greenfly.

Hard  work, cleanliness and a firm loyalty to the land where we live are other virtues that we can learn from ants.
