Grade-6 English, Self-Contained

Self-Contained

I think I could turn and live with the animals,

They are so placid and self-contained.

I stand and look at them, and long, and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their own condition,

They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,

They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God;

Not one is dissatisfied not one is demented

with the mania of owning things;

Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind

that lived thousands of years ago.

Not one is respectable and unhappy

over the whole earth.

The poet Walt Whitman talks about humans and animals in the poem. He explains how humans are never satisfied with their lives. Whitman compares the nature of humans with that of animals.

In the beginning, Whitman expresses a whimsical wish to live with the animals. He feels that the animals are always calm. They are not dependent like human beings, for any of their needs. For example, we are always looking for company so that we are not lonely. We like to surround ourselves with people and really like it when we are told how popular we are. Animals do not need to look to someone who has more, authority and show obedience to him or her.

Animals do not spend their lives complaining about life like humans. Animals, unlike humans, do not, the about a week from now or a year from now. Animals live for the present. They only worry about their immediate needs.

They do not waste time discussing their duty to God. Not a single animal is unhappy on the whole earth.
