Ans- Velu stood on the platform but he felt “as if he was still on a moving train”. This is because he had travelled a long distance and the effect of the moving train usually remains for a while even after the journey has ended.

 

Q 2. What made him feel miserable?

Ans- Velu had run away from his village two days ago. For two

days he had eaten nothing but some peanuts and a piece of jaggery. This made him feel miserable.

 

Q 3. (i) Velu travelled without a ticket. Why?

Ans- Velu travelled without a ticket because he had no money.

 

Q 3 (ii) How did he escape the ticket collector’s attention?

Ans- Velu escaped the ticket collector’s attention because he didn’t come to the unreserved compartment.

 

Q 4. Why had Velu run away from home?

Ans- Velu had run away because he couldn’t stand his father beating him for one more day. His father would snatch away all the money Velu and his sisters earned and spend it on drink.

 

Q 5. Why did he decide to follow the ‘strange’ girl?

Ans- Velu decided to follow the strange girl because he was hungry and he had no idea where to go.

 

Q 6. Can Velu read Tamil and English? How do you know?

Ans- Velu could not read the signboards outside the station because they were in English but he could read the signboard of Central Jail which was in Tamil. This indicates that he was not able to read English but he could read Tamil.

 

Q 7. “If you are not careful, you will soon be counting bars there,” the girl said.

(i)           What is she referring to?

Ans- She was referring to the Central Jail.

(ii) What does she mean when she says “If you are not careful...”?

(She says something a little later which means the same. Find that

sentence.)

Ans- In India rag picking by children below 14 years is dealt under Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 198. She means that all he had to do to stay away from jail is not to get caught.

Ans- The girl led Velu to behind a wedding hall (Kalyana Mandapam) where there was a huge pile of left-over food.

Ans- Velu was not happy to find this work but he accepted it to fill his stomach until he finds a better job.
