Answer these questions:

1.     What tasks, do you think, were assigned to the dog and the ox?

Ans- The dog was given the task of fetching and carrying, while the ox was given the task of ploughing.

2.     Why did the camel live in the middle of the desert?

Ans- The camel lived in the middle of the desert because he did not want to work.

3.     What made the dog, the horse and the ox very angry?

Ans- The dog, the horse and the ox were very angry because the camel did not work at all and this doubled their work.

4.     How did the Djinn know the horse was complaining against the camel?

Ans- The horse said, “there’s a thing in the middle of your Desert with a long neck and long legs, and he hasn’t done a stroke of work since Monday morning. He won’t trot.”

This physical description of animal indicated to Djinn that the horse was complaining against the camel.

5.     The camel was looking at his own reflection in the pool. What does it suggest to you about the camel?

Ans- The camel was looking at his own reflection in the pool. This indicates that the camel was idle and puffed up with pride.

6.     The camel said, “Humph” repeatedly. How did it affect him?

Ans- The camel said, “Humph” repeatedly. So, the Djinn gave him a hump on his back in order to punish him and make him work.

7.     What, according to the Djinn, was the use of the “humph”?

Ans- According to the Djinn, the horse could work without eating for three days. He could live on his hump.

8.     “...he has never yet learnt to behave”.  In the light of this, what is the writer’s opinion about the camel?

Ans- The camel was given hump so that he can work without eating and compensate for those three days when he didn’t work at all.

Camel still has a hump on his back, therefore the writer thinks that the camel has not learnt to behave yet.

Discuss the following topics in groups.

1.   Can this story be factually true?

Ans- In my opinion this story can not be factually true as camel has hump because of its adaptation to desert climate, not because of the punishment of a Djinn.

2.   What, according to you, is the story about?

Ans- According to me, the story is about the dignity of work. There is no such thing as ‘menial work’. It is not right for anyone to be just idle and do no work.
