What is internet?

 Internet is a large network of networks. A network is a group of interconnected computers that allows sharing information. Internet is also called the Net.

Using Internet, we can access a vast source of information anywhere anytime.

 

 

History of Internet-

 

In the initial days of computers, there was no concept of networking. The computers were individual systems. The initial development of the Intern started in 1969 by the US Department of Defence called Advanced Research Project Agency or ARPA. This organization created a computer network for military use which they called the ARPANET. This ARPANET laid the foundation for today's Internet.

 

 

Basic Requirements for an Internet Connection-

 

When connected to the Internet, you can get access to billions of websites. To connect our computer to the Internet, we need the following:

 



 

·        To connect to the Internet, we need:

o   A computer like desktop, laptop, smartphone, etc.

o   A good processor speed.

o   Memory with at least 200 MB of free space.

·        Telephone or cable line and hotspots are some of the ways by which we may connect to the Internet.

·        A web browser is a program that allows you to find and view websites on the Internet Microsoft Edge is the default web browser of Windows 10.

·        An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company or business that provides

 

Terms related to the Internet

 

There are some important terms related to the Internet which we must know.

World Wide Web-

World Wide Web (WWW or the web or W3) is a group of interconnected pages that contain text, pictures, sound video on the Internet.

Web browser-

A web browser is a program that allows you to find and view websites on the internet.

Website-

A website is a group of related webpages that contain information.

Webpage-

Webpage is part of a website. It has information and can have text, pictures, sounds, videos, etc.

Web address-

The web address contains information about the location of the webpage. The address of a website or webpage is called the Uniform Resource Locator or URL.

 

Hyperlink-

A hyperlink is a word, phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to another website, or a different webpage on the same website.

Home Page-

The first page which appears when you open a website is the home page.

Search Engine-

A search engine helps you to find information or a website.

 

Uses and Disadvantages of Internet

 

Uses of Internet-

Today Internet has become part of our daily lives. It is an easy way to get information from all over the world. It provides various facilities the people. Some of most popular uses Internet are:

 

      ·        Sharing files, pictures, videos information.

      ·        Surfing the web to find information about any topics.

      ·        Entertainment online games, watching movies, listening songs.

      ·        Communication meeting with teachers or members using email, online chatting.

      ·        Online booking of airline tickets, hotels, etc.


 In addition to above points, internet plays vital role on other spheres of life.


Disadvantages of Internet-

The main disadvantages of internet are as follows:

      ·        Too much addiction to Internet leads to distraction, reduced physical activity, time wastage etc.

      ·        Cyber threats like hacking.

      ·        Attraction towards audio and video contents which are not suitable for certain age groups.

     ·        Virus threats that can be damaging to data and information on the computer.

·        Possible threats of the stealing personal information.

 

Dos and Don'ts of Internet

 

Internet is a blessing it used wisely carefully. These are some tips that can be followed while using internet.

 

 

Dos of Internet-

 

      ·        Respect the privacy other users.

·        Always keep password confidential.

·        Change your password regularly. Try to keep an alphanumeric password with special characters.

·        Choose to ignore messages that you are uncomfortable with.

·        Discuss with elders about the best online practices.

·        If you sense any danger, log off immediately. Speak to your parents and contact the required authorities, if required.


Don'ts of Internet

 

     ·        Do not share your picture or any other personal information like address, telephone number, etc.

·        Do not download or install application without consulting your parents.

·        Do not open or download attachments from an unknown source as they may contain viruses.

·        Do not click 'remember' username and password options.
