Collocation is the combination of words formed when two or more words are often used together in a way that sounds correct.

 

For example- heavy rain, bitterly disappointed, agree with

A collocation is two or more words that often go together. These combinations just sound "right" to native English speakers, who use them all the time. On the other hand, other combinations may be unnatural and just sound "wrong".

 

Types of Collocations-

 

There are different types of collocations based on the combinations of verb, noun, adjective etc.

 

    1.  adjective + adjective

·     fully aware

·     richly decorated

·     utterly stupid

·     completely satisfied

    2.  adjective + noun

·     regular exercise

·     intrinsic quality

·     inbuilt feature

    3.  noun + noun

·     round of applause

·     bar of soap

·     surge of anger

·     rush of adrenalin

    4.  noun + verb or verb + noun

·     committing suicide

·     making bed

·     dog barking

·     do homework

·     save electricity

·     draw a conclusion

    5.  verb + expression with preposition

·     filled with horror

·     run out of money

·     drive to crime

·     burst into tears

·     keep in touch

    6.  verb + adverb

·     whispered softly

·     placed gently

·     wave frantically

    7.  miscellaneous allocations

·     hand in hand

·     by the light of the moon

·     stars above

·     make time for
