A Strange Wrestling Match (Part-2)

एक अजीब कुश्ती मैच (भाग-2)

 

VIJAY Singh picked up a piece of rock from the sand. “Take this,” he offered it to the ghost, “and squeeze it hard. It is filled with fluid. See if I am wrong.” While the ghost tried to squeeze the rock first with one hand, then with both, Vijay Singh stealthily took out the egg from his pocket.

विजय सिंह ने रेत से चट्टान का एक टुकड़ा उठाया। "इसे लो," उसने इसे भूत को पेश किया, "और इसे जोर से निचोड़ें। यह द्रव से भरा होता है। देखें कि क्या मैं गलत हूं।" भूत ने पहले एक हाथ से चट्टान को निचोड़ने की कोशिश की, फिर दोनों से| विजय सिंह ने चुपके से अपनी जेब से अंडा निकाल लिया।

 

 

Vijay Singh snatched the rock from the ghost and placed it between both hands and squeezed. At once the yellow yolk oozed from around his

fingers, and the crackling of the egg-shell created the illusion of the stone being crushed. The ghost was so astonished he did not notice Vijay Singh bending to clean his hands with sand and disposing of the tell-tale shell. Vijay Singh then picked up another piece of rock and gave it to the ghost. Without a word the ghost took it, felt it, and peered at it. Vijay Singh put his hand into his pocket to take out the lump of salt.

 

विजय सिंह ने भूत से चट्टान छीनकर दोनों हाथों के बीच रख कर निचोड़ लिया। उसकी उंगलियों के चारों ओर से एक ही बार में पीली जर्दी निकल गई , और अंडे के छिलके की चटकने से पत्थर के कुचले जाने का भ्रम पैदा हो गया। भूत इतना चकित हुआ कि उसने विजय सिंह को अपने हाथों को रेत से साफ करने और खोल को निपटाने के लिए झुकते हुए नहीं देखा। विजय सिंह ने फिर चट्टान का एक और टुकड़ा उठाया और भूत को दे दिया। एक शब्द बोले बिना भूत ने उसे ले लिया, उसे महसूस किया और उसकी ओर देखा। विजय सिंह ने नमक की गांठ निकालने के लिए अपनी जेब में हाथ डाला।

 

“This is only a stone,” protested ghost. “And anyway it is too dark to see.”

"यह केवल एक पत्थर है," भूत ने विरोध किया। "और वैसे भी यह देखने में बहुत अंधेरा है।"

 

“Never heard of a ghost who can’t see in the dark!” remarked Vijay Singh. “That stone which you hold in your hand contains salt. Crumble it and see.” Again the ghost tried to crush the stone, but in vain. He handed over the stone to Vijay Singh. The ghost was now beginning to doubt his ghostly powers.

"एक भूत के बारे में कभी नहीं सुना जो अंधेरे में नहीं देख सकता!" विजय सिंह ने टिप्पणी की। “जिस पत्थर को तुम हाथ में पकड़ते हो, उसमें नमक होता है। इसे तोड़कर देखो।'' भूत ने फिर से पत्थर को कुचलने की कोशिश की, लेकिन व्यर्थ। उसने उसे विजय सिंह को पत्थर सौंप दिया। भूत को अब अपनी प्रेत शक्तियों पर संदेह होने लगा था।

 

“I can see that you’re not going to be a worthy opponent. What’s the use of wrestling with a weakling whom I can floor in a minute?” So saying, Vijay Singh casually crumbled the lump of salt and let the stone drop in the darkness. He held out his hand and commanded the ghost to taste the

powdered stone.

 

"मैं देख सकता हूं कि तुम एक योग्य प्रतिद्वंद्वी नहीं हो। एक कमजोर व्यक्ति के साथ कुश्ती का क्या फायदा जिसे मैं एक मिनट में फर्श पर गिरा हूं?" इतना कह कर विजय सिंह ने लापरवाही से नमक की गांठ तोड़ दी और पत्थर को अँधेरे में गिरा दिया। उसने अपना हाथ बढ़ाया और भूत को पत्थर के चूर्ण का स्वाद चखने की आज्ञा दी।

 

Mesmerised with the pahalwan’s extraordinary strength, the ghost did as he was told. Alarm shot through him. This man could easily vanquish him in a wrestling bout in the dark. But perhaps, he could be tricked in other ways. Assuming a servile manner, the ghost said, “Friend Vijay Singh, it is an honour to meet a man like you! I admit   to   being defeated. But where will you go tonight? Rest in my house. You can leave tomorrow.”

पहलवान की असाधारण शक्ति से मंत्रमुग्ध होकर भूत ने वैसा ही किया जैसा उसे बताया गया था। वह चौकन्ना हो गया। यह आदमी अंधेरे में कुश्ती की लड़ाई में उसे आसानी से हरा सकता था। लेकिन शायद, उसे दूसरे तरीकों से बरगलाया जा सकता था। सेवा भाव दिखाते हुए भूत ने कहा, “मित्र विजय सिंह, आप जैसे व्यक्ति से मिलना सम्मान की बात है! मैं पराजित होना स्वीकार करता हूं। लेकिन तुम आज रात कहाँ जाओगे? मेरे घर में आराम करो। आप कल जा सकते हैं।"

 

Now thoroughly elated, Vijay Singh replied, “I cannot refuse your hospitality but tomorrow you will go with me as my prisoner. I must display the trophy of my victory to my people!” The ghost bowed in agreement, but silently vowed to kill Vijay Singh in the night. He led him to his house in the cave.

अब पूरी तरह से उत्साहित, विजय सिंह ने उत्तर दिया, "मैं आपके आतिथ्य को मना नहीं कर सकता लेकिन कल आप मेरे साथ मेरे कैदी के रूप में चलेंगे। मुझे अपनी जीत की ट्रॉफी अपने लोगों को दिखानी चाहिए!" भूत ने सहमति में सिर झुकाया, लेकिन रात में चुपचाप विजय सिंह को मारने की कसम खा ली। वह उसे गुफा में अपने घर ले गया।

 

The ghost fed him dry fruits and a lot of milk, and later led him to a luxurious bed to sleep on, complete with pillows and bolsters.

 

भूत ने उसे सूखे मेवे और ढेर सारा दूध खिलाया, और बाद में उसे सोने के लिए एक शानदार बिस्तर पर ले गया, जिसमें तकिए और बोल्ट थे।

 

But Vijay Singh lay awake listening to the snores of the ghost. In the middle of the night, he slipped off his bed. He placed a bolster in the centre of the bed, throwing over it a coverlet to make it look exactly like a sleeping man having done this he crouched watchfully in a dark corner.

लेकिन विजय सिंह भूत के खर्राटे सुनकर जाग गए। आधी रात में वह अपने बिस्तर से निकल गया। उसने बिस्तर के केंद्र में एक बोल्टर (लोट) रखा, उसके ऊपर एक चादर डाल दिया ताकि यह बिल्कुल सोए हुए व्यक्ति की तरह दिखे, ऐसा करने के बाद वह एक अंधेरे कोने में ध्यान से झुक गया।

 

Sure enough, just before the break of dawn, the ghost approached the bed armed with a stout club. He brought the club down on what he thought was Vijay Singh’s head. Not hearing even a groan, he smiled, pleased that he had killed his enemy.

निश्चित रूप से, भोर होने से ठीक पहले, भूत एक मजबूत क्लब से लैस बिस्तर के पास पहुंचा। उन्होंने मुगदर को विजय सिंह के सिर पर मार दिया। एक कराह न सुनकर वह मुस्कुराया, प्रसन्न होकर उसने अपने शत्रु को मार डाला।

 

However, just to make doubly sure, he struck the bolster

six times more. Satisfied with his work, he returned to his couch, and covering his head, settled down to sleep again. Meanwhile, Vijay Singh crept silently back into bed. After a pause, he groaned, as if in disgust, threw back his coverlet, and sat up.

Disturbed by the noise, the ghost peeped from under his bedclothes to see the strong man stretching his arms above his head and yawning. For a moment the ghost turned rigid with shock. “Friend ghost, there are insects in your cave,” said Vijay Singh in a complaining voice. “Here I was, enjoying the sweetest sleep I’ve had in years, and there comes this insect to trouble me. I distinctly counted seven flappings of its wings. Of course, it has not bitten me, but it’s most annoying.” The ghost panicked. Those seven blows would have reduced any other man to pulp. ‘There is no safety near a formidable wrestler like this,’ he thought and fled from the cave leaving behind all his ill-gotten wealth.

 

शोर से परेशान होकर, भूत ने अपने शयनकक्ष के नीचे से झाँका कि वह बलवान व्यक्ति अपने सिर के ऊपर अपनी बाहें फैला रहा है और जम्हाई ले रहा है। एक पल के लिए भूत सदमे से पथरा गया। "दोस्त भूत, तुम्हारी गुफा में कीड़े हैं," विजय सिंह ने शिकायत भरे स्वर में कहा। "यहाँ मैं वर्षों में सबसे मीठी नींद का आनंद ले रहा था, और यह कीट मुझे परेशान करने के लिए आता है। मैंने उसके पंखों के सात बार फड़फड़ाने को स्पष्ट रूप से गिना। बेशक, इसने मुझे काटा नहीं है, लेकिन यह सबसे ज्यादा परेशान करने वाला है।" भूत घबरा गया। उन सात प्रहारों ने किसी अन्य व्यक्ति का गूदा बना दिया होता। 'इस तरह के दुर्जेय पहलवान से बचाने का कोई तरीका नहीं है,' उसने सोचा और अपनी सारी अवैध संपत्ति को छोड़कर गुफा से भाग गया।

 

It took several camels from the village to remove the property Vijay Singh had acquired. He returned much of it to the rightful owners. He went especially to the old woman, thanked her for her invaluable gift, and asked for her granddaughter’s hand in marriage.

 

विजय सिंह ने जो संपत्ति अर्जित की थी, उसे निकालने के लिए गांव से कई ऊंटों को लाया गया। उसने इसका अधिकांश भाग सही स्वामियों को लौटा दिया। वह विशेष रूप से बूढ़ी औरत के पास गया, उसे उसके अमूल्य उपहार के लिए धन्यवाद दिया, और उसकी पोती का विवाह में हाथ मांगा।

 

Henceforth, Vijay Singh was more careful about boasting. It is said that no traveller was ever troubled again in the Haunted Desert
