Once there was a king called Solomon. He was a very wise king. People talked about his wisdom all over the world. So the queen of Sheba thought to test his wisdom and came to the court of King Solomon. Soloman’s men received her and led to the king. The Queen of Sheba had two garlands in her hands. Only one of them was a garland of real flowers. “Which one of these  has real flowers?” the queen asked. The king was in deep thought for a few moments. Then he saw some bees near the window. He ordered his men, “Open that window.”

The window was opened and the bees flew in and sat on one of the garlands. “That is the garland of real flowers” the king said.

a) Answer the following questions.

Ans- King Vikramaditya was famous for his wisdom and judgement.

 

Q.2 What were the two women quarrelling over?

Ans- The two women quarrelling over a baby.

 

Q.3 What did the king ask the man to do with the sword?

Ans- The king asked the man to cut the baby into two halves with the sword.

 

Q.4 “Give the baby to Sarla,” the king said. Why did the king say so?

Ans-  The king asked to give the baby to Sarla because she was the real mother who stopped king’s man from cutting the baby and asked to give the baby to Lata.

 

Q.5 How did the king trap the thief?

Ans-  The king gave them sticks of the same length and told that the thief’s stick will be longer by an inch the next day. The thief had cut the stick out of fear and got trapped.

 

Q.6 What do the two stories show?

Ans- The two stories show that king Vikramaditya was a great judge.

Grammar in use

Ans- The old man asked his eldest son to tie the sticks into a bundle with a piece of string.

 

4) Ashok said to Prem, “Bring me some hot water from the kitchen.”

Ans- Ashok asked Prem to bring him some hot water from the kitchen.

 

5) A man said to his son, “Wrap one of the test tubes in black paper.”

Ans- A man asked his son to wrap one of the test tubes in black paper.

 

Read these sentences carefully

          John looked at Mary.

          Mary looked at John.

These two sentences can be combined as follows:

          John and Mary looked at each other.

 

Now combine the following pairs of sentences as in the example shown above.

 

1.  Ravi quarrelled with Ashok.

     Ashok quarrelled with Ravi.

Ans- Ravi and Ashok quarrelled with each other.

 

2. Balu knew Chandran.

    Chandran knew Balu.

Ans- Balu and Chandran knew each other.

 

3. Mohan liked Baba.

    Baba liked Mohan,

2) He is characterized as an ideal king.

3) He is known for his generosity, courage, and patronage of scholars.

4) Vikramaditya began the Vikrama Samvat era in 57 BCE after defeating the Shakas.

5) Vikramaditya is featured in hundreds of traditional Indian stories, including those in Baital Pachisi and Singhasan Battisi.

Two women were brought before King Vikramaditya. Both these women had a quarrel over a single baby. Each woman was saying that she was the baby's mother.

 

One lady said, "Oh King! I am the baby's mother".

 

The other lady said, "Oh King! Believe her not. She is not the mother. I am the mother of the child".

 

King Vikramaditya was confused. After a deep thought he said, "Cut the baby into two and give one part to each mother". One woman was silent. The other cried "Oh King! Let she have the baby. Let the baby live". The king gave the child to the crying mother.
