Glossary
Knee- the joint between the top and bottom part of the leg (घुटना)
Quarrel - An angry argument or disagreement between people ( झगड़ा)
String- rope made of several threads twisted together ( रस्सी)
Task- a piece of work ( काम)
Die - to stop living ( मरना)
Tie- hold two or more things together using rope ( बाँधना)
Hard -  difficult to do ( मुश्किल)
Harm -  damage or injure ( नुकसान पहुँचाना)
Tightly-  firmly ( मजबूती से)
Bundle-  a number of things tied together ( गठरी) 

Moral of the story- We must stay together to be safe from enemies.

Comprehension

Answer the following questions.

Q.1 Was the old man able to stop his sons’ quarrel?
Ans- No, the old man was not able to stop his sons’ quarrel.

Q.2 What did he ask them to bring?
Ans- He asked each one of them to bring him a stick.

Q.3  What did the eldest son do with the piece of string?
Ans- The eldest son tied the sticks together into a bundle with the piece of string.

Q.4 Were the sons able to break the sticks at first? Why?
Ans- No, the sons were not able to break the sticks at first because they were tied together into a bundle.

Q.5 The sons untied the bundle, now they were able to break the sticks. Why?
Ans- Yes, they were able to break the sticks after untying the bundle as the sticks were separate this time.

Q.6 How can we be safe from our enemies?
Ans- We can be safe from our enemies by staying together.

Q.7 What did the old man actually wish his sons to do?  
Ans- The old man actually wished his sons to stay together.

Q.8  What were the last words of the old man?
Ans- The last words of the old man were, “You must stay together to be safe from your enemies. No one will then be able to harm you.”

Complete the sentences as given in the story.

Grammar in use

Look at these two pairs of sentences.

     a.   The guard is showing the green flag. (train / leave)
     Ans- The train is about to leave.

    Ans-  The train was about to leave.

Now make five sentences using ‘about to’ with the following:

Use words given in brackets.
1.    The bell is ringing. (school, begin)
     Ans- The school is about to begin.

     2.    The headmaster stood up. ( he,  speak)
    Ans- He was about to speak. 

    3.   The referee blew the whistle. ( the match,  start)
    Ans- The match was about to start.

    4.    The sky is red in the East. ( the sun,  rise)
     Ans- The sun is about to rise.

    5.  The boys are sitting down at the table. ( they, eat)
     Ans- They are about to eat.

1.    We can stay safe from our enemies.
2.    Many hands lighten the load.

4.    We can accomplish difficult tasks.
5.    It becomes easier and faster to do things.
