The sentence

The sentence

Read the following sentences:
1.  Rises the sun in East the.
2.   my friend best are you.
3.   Name smita my is.
4.   best policy honesty is the.

Do these groups of words make any sense? No, they don't. Therefore, they cannot be called sentences.

Now, read the following sentences:
1.  The sun rises in the east.
2.  You are my best friend.
3.  My name is Smita.
4.  Honesty is the best policy.

Now these groups of words make complete sense. So, they are called sentences.

A group of words that is arranged in proper order and makes complete sense is called a sentence.
👉
  • The first word of a sentence always begins with a capital letter.
  • The words must be written in a systematic way so that they can convey proper meaning and make sense.
  • A full stop must we put at the end of a sentence. An interrogative sentence ends with a sign of interrogation (?) and an exclamatory sentence ends with a sign of exclamation (!).

Sometimes a sentence may be made up of just one word; as
(i) Listen
(ii) Stop
(iii) Go
All these are one word sentences. They give commands. In these sentences the subject ‘you’ is understood.
