Subject and Predicate

Subject and Predicate

Every complete sentence needs two things: a subject and predicate.

Subject
It is the person or thing that is being discussed, described, or dealt with.

Example
Joe likes to run at the public park.
My mother tells her the story.

Subject in command
Sometimes the subject is not clear. For example, this sentence-

Do your job perfectly.

There is no directly mentioned ‘subject’ in this sentence. For most commands, the subject is implied. It usually implies you.

Subject in Passive Voice
In the sentences of passive voice, the direct object of the active becomes the subject of the passive and the subject of the active appears in the passive as complement of the preposition by in a PP functioning as complement. Also the actor is not always included in the sentence.

Everyone saw the incident. (active)
The incident was seen by everyone. (passive)

In this case, the incident is the subject.

Predicate
The part of sentence that tells us something about the subject is called predicate.

Example-
Joe likes to run at the public park.

The question you can ask yourself is “What does Joe do?” The answer, likes to run in the public park, is the predicate.

My mother tells her the story
