Kinds of Sentences
Sentences are of four kinds:
1- Assertive
Sentence (Declarative Sentence)
2- Interrogative
Sentences
3- Imperative
Sentencess
4- Exclamatory
Sentences
Assertive Sentences-
A sentence that states or denies something is called
an assertive sentence. These sentences are sometimes termed as statements.
Examples-
1- They
are playing in the garden.
2- My
brother lives in Delhi.
3- Reena
will not dance in the party.
4- My
sister does not live in Agra.
5- They
are no longer my friends.
Interrogative Sentences-
A sentence that asks a question is called an
interrogative sentence. They are also known as questions.
Examples-
1- How
old are you?
2- What
are you looking for?
3- Why
don’t you want to play football with us?
4- Did
you get hurt?
5- Where
does this road lead to?
Imperative sentences-
A sentence that expresses a command, an order, a
direction, or a request. It is also known as a jussive or directive sentence.
Examples-
1- Open
the door.
2- Never
take the good for granted.
3- Please
hand me that pen.
4- Let
us play.
5- Post
this letter.
Exclamatory Sentences-
A sentence that expresses a sudden or strong feeling
of joy or sorrow, a wish or a prayer is called an exclamatory sentence.
Examples-
1- What
a beautiful sight!
2- May
we prosper!
3- Alas!
He is no more.
4- Hurrah!
We have won the match.
5- How
delicious the food is!
A sentence that describes or states negative meaning is called
negative sentence. All sentences can be written in a negative sense by using ‘not’,
‘no’, ‘never’ etc.

- Put Full Stop (.) at
the end of Declarative or Assertive and Imperative Sentences.
- Put a Question Mark (?) at the end of Interrogative
Sentences.
- Put an Exclamation Mark (!) at the end of Exclamatory
Sentences.
