What are heterographs?
The word ‘heterograph’ literally means ‘different
writing’. It refers to the words in English language that sound the same as
other words but they have different spellings and different meanings.
The only thing that links one heterography to another
is identical pronunciations.
Some Common Heterographs-
Paws & Pause
Paws are feet of an
animal such as a cat, dog or bear.
Pause is a short period
when you stop doing something before continuing.
One & Won
One is the number 1.
Won is the past tense of win
Son & Sun
Son is a male offspring
Sun is the ball of fire in
the sky that the Earth goes round, and that gives us heat and light.
Need & Knead
Need- If you need
something, or need to do something, you cannot successfully achieve what you
want without it. E.g., I need to make a phone call.
Knead- to work or press
( a soft substance, such as bread dough) into a uniform mixture with the hands.
Flour & Flower
flour is a white or
brown powder that is made by grinding grain.
Flower is a part of a
plant which is often brightly coloured and grows at the end of a stem.
Week & Weak
Week is a period of
seven days
Weak someone who is
not healthy or do not have good muscles.
Blew & Blue
Blew -past tense of
blow
Blue- a colour
Hair & Hare
Hair- Fine threads that
grow in mass on your head
Hare-A hare is an
animal like a rabbit but larger with long ears, long legs, and a small tail.
Road & Rode
Road-A road is a long
piece of hard ground which is built between two places so that people can drive
or ride easily from one place to the other.
Rode-Rode is the past
tense of ride.
Be & Bee-
Be- an auxiliary verb
Bee-A bee is an insect
with a yellow-and-black striped body that makes a buzzing noise as it flies
Cite & Site-
Cite- To quote or mention,
especially as an example or proof of what you are saying.
Sight-ability to see
Might & Mite -
Might- It is a modal verb
used to indicate that something will possibly happen or be true in the future,
but you cannot be certain.
Mite- very tiny
creatures that live on plants
Altar & Alter
Altar- An altar is a
holy table in a church or temple.
Alter- to change or
transform
All & Awl-
All- You use all to
indicate that you are referring to the whole of a particular group or thing
Awl- A pointed hand
tool with a fluted blade used for piercing wood, leather, etc.
Toad & Towed-
Toad- A toad is a
creature which is similar to a frog but which has a drier skin and spends less
time in water.
Towed- past and past
participle of tow. If one vehicle tows another, it pulls it along behind it.
