Appraise or Apprise?

The verbs appraise and apprise can be easily confused.

Appraise
Appraise means ‘assess (someone or something)’. If you appraise something or someone, you consider them carefully and form an opinion about them. Assess, judge, review and estimate are the synonyms of appraise.

     1)   Rita’s stamp collection was appraised by everyone.
     2)   The recent case prompted many employers to appraise their recruitment policies.

Uses of Appraise

To estimate the monetary value of; determine the worth of; assess
     1)   There is a need to appraise current practices.
     2)   We had an expert appraise the house before we bought it

To estimate the nature, quality, importance, etc.
     1)   This is the perfect time of year to appraise our values.
     2)   He tried to appraise the poetry of John Updike

ЁЯСЙThe noun form is appraisal, meaning an evaluation:
    1)   Please give me your honest appraisal of the book I’ve written.
    2)   We need to conduct a thorough appraisal of the property before buying it.

Apprise

Apprise means ‘inform (someone)’. When you are apprised of something, someone tells you about it. Make aware, tell, warn and advise are synonyms of apprise.
     1)   Have customers been fully apprised of the advantages?
     2)   The police were apprised of the situation.
     3)   We must apprise them of the dangers that may be involved.
     4)   Mac should apprise him of what we face.
