Materiel or Material?

Materiel or Material?

It is not uncommon to see the word material where materiel should have been used. It is also not uncommon for people to think the word materiel is a spelling mistake of material.

Material is the matter from which a thing is made.

Materiel is the equipment or supplies in military or commercial supply-chain management.

Materiel

The equipment and supplies used by armies and other organizations are “materiel,” which is never spelled with an S on the end.
So, a forklift truck (which is equipment used in the supply chain) and a can of petrol (which is one of the supplies) would both be classified as materiel. In other words, materiel is the things a military force or a business needs to do its job.
