Homographs
What are homographs?
The words in English that have same spelling but can be used in different meanings with same or different pronunciations.

Some Common Homographs-
Lead
Lead (pronounced as fed) meaning a soft, heavy toxic metal. E.g., Gold is heavier than lead.
Lead (pronounced as knead) meaning to guide or conduct. E.g., Mother duck will lead her duckling around.

Wind
Wind (pronounced as bind)- meaning turning or wrapping. E.g., Wind your watch. Road winds uphill.
Wind (pronounced as ginned)- meaning current of air. E.g., Leaves rustled the wind.

Minute
Minute- (pronounced as bennet) meaning one of the sixty part of an hour E.g., Pizza will take about twenty minutes to cook.
Minute- (rhymes with cute) meaning small, little or miniature. E.g., Only a minute amount is needed.

Does
Does- (rhyming with fuzz) It is the third person of the verb to do.
Does- (rhyming with doze). It is plural form of noun “doe” (a female dear).

Drawer
Drawer (rhyming with more) meaning a piece of furniture.
Drawer ( pronounced as draw-uhrr) is a person who draws.

Number
Number (rhyming with lumber) meaning a mathematical object.
Number (rhyming with summer) meaning more numb (n^m).

Tear
Tear (rhyming with fear) meaning drops of salty water that come out of eyes when you cry. E.g., Her eyes were filled with tears.
Tear (rhyming with rare) meaning damaging or moving. E.g., Do not tear page from your notebook.

Bear
Bear- A large, strong wild animal with thick fur and sharp claws.  E.g., teddy bear, polar bear
Bear- meaning to hold or carry. E.g., The ice was not thick enough to carry the load of marching men.

Evening
Evening- It is the time between noon and night.
Evening- Evening comes from the word ‘even’ means to make something smooth. E.g., Evening out the surface.

Desert
Desert- meaning to leave or abandon a person or place. E.g., He has been abandoned by most of his advisers.
Desert- meaning a dry area of land with no access to water or vegetation. E.g., The Sahara Desert is the largest desert on the earth.

Fine
Fine- meaning a penalty one pays for a crime. E.g., She has to pay a fine of 50 rupees on late payment of fee.
Fine- meaning something that is made very delicately or impressively. E.g., She has made a fine piece or art using waste material!
Fine- meaning satisfactory or acceptable. E.g., All instruments are working fine.
