Grade-3 Science, Term-2 Chapter-5 Sun as a Natural Resource

Chapter - 5
Topic:  Sun as a Natural Resource

Write the comparison between:
Renewable resource and Nonrenewable resource
Renewable resource
Non-renewable resource
A renewable resource never gets exhausted.
 A non-renewable resource gets exhausted.
It can be used repeatedly.
It cannot be used repeatedly.
It is replaced naturally within a certain period of time.
It is replaced naturally within a certain period of time.
Example- Fresh water, Wind Energy, Solar energy
Example- Coal, Pertol

Fill in the blanks with suitable word:
(light, drying, heat, bones, oxygen, chlorophyll)
     1.    Sun helps us to form certain vitamin in our body that makes our bones strong and keeps us away from diseases.
     2.    The heat energy of Sun helps in drying of wet clothes.
     3.    Oxygen gas is given off in the process of photosynthesis.
     4.    Pigment chlorophyll present in green leaves helps plant to trap Sun’s energy.
     5.    Sun provides us light and heat energy.

State whether the following statements are true or false:
     1.    Stone is a natural resource. True
     2.    Coal and petrol are renewable resources. False
     3.    Without sunlight the plants cannot grow. True
     4.    In the absence of heat, we all would freeze to death. True
     5.    Sun’s energy is called electric energy. False
     6.    Sunshine vitamin is necessary to make our bones strong and keep us away from diseases. True

Give one word for the following”
1-  The Sun’s energy.
     Solar Energy
2-  A natural resource which never gets exhausted and can be used repeatedly.
Renewable resource
3-  A natural resource which gets exhausted and cannot be used repeatedly.
Non-renewable resource
4-  Process by which plants make their own food in green leaves.
Photosynthesis
5-  A device in which sun’s energy is used to cook food.
    Solar Cooker
6-  An electrical device which converts sunlight into electricity.
    Solar Cell
7-  Device used to heat water by absorbing sunlight.
    Solar Panel

Arrange these steps for water purification by sunlight in correct sequence:
      ·   Expose the bottles to the sun from morning to evening for at least 6 hours.
      ·   The water is now ready for consumption.
      ·   Wash the bottle well the first time you use it.
      ·   Fill the bottle with water and close the lid well.
Ans-
1-  Wash the bottle well the first time you use it.
2-  Fill the bottle with water and close the lid well.
3-  Expose the bottles to the sun from morning to evening for at least 6 hours.
4-  The water is now ready for consumption.

Answer these questions:
Q1.     What is a natural resource? Give example.
Ans-  A natural resource is something found in nature and can be used by people.
Example- air, water, animals, soil, stones etc.

         Q2.     Define photosynthesis.
Ans- Photosynthesis is the process by which plants prepare their own food, with the help of chlorophyll, sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.

Q3.     Leaves are called food factory of the plant. Why?
Ans-  Chlorophyll present in the leaves traps the sunlight for making food. Leaves use the energy of the sun to change water (from soil) and carbon dioxide (from air) into a kind of sugar. Therefore, leaves are called food factory of the plant.

Q4.     What is the solar cooker used for?
Ans- Solar cooker is a device that uses Sun’s energy to cook food.

Q5.     Give an example of a renewable resource.
Ans- Fresh water, Wind energy and solar energy are examples of renewable energy.

Q6.     List any five ways to conserve energy in your daily life.
Ans- Ways to conserve energy in our daily life-
1-  Switch off the appliances when not in use
2-  Use solar cookers for warming or cooking food.
          3-  Use energy efficient appliance.
4-  Switch off the light bulbs and tube lights during day time.

Q7.     How is electricity generated from sunlight?
Ans- Solar panels are used to convert sunlight into electricity. A solar panel is made by arranging large number of solar cells together as one cell cannot produce sufficient energy.

Q8.     What do you know about solar cooker? How does it cook food?
Ans- Solar cooker is a device that uses Sun’s energy to cook food.
Solar cooker is a box which is painted black from inside for complete absorption of solar heat. It has a glass lid. Food is kept inside vessels which are also darkened to absorb more heat. Thus trapped solar energy helps to cook food kept in vessels.

Q9.     How is salt prepared from sea water?
Ans-

For preparing salt, sea water is collected in shallow flat beds. When this water is completely evaporated by sun’s heat, mountains of salt are left behind. This salt is then collected and cleaned.
