Glossary
Incense- A substance that produces a sweet smell when burnt
Tattered- Old and torn; in bad condition
Chant- to sing or shout that same words again and again
Bead- a small round ball of wood, glass etc with a hole through it, so that it may be put on a string or wire
Garment- a piece of clothing
Mantle- a loose piece of clothing without sleeve worn by monastics which is joined at the neck and extends to the floor
Meditation- the practice of thinking deeply in silence especially for religious regions
Stained- having durty marks that are difficult to remove
Sweat- perspiration
Toil- to work very hard
Till- to prepare and use land

Tiller- a person who turns over soil
Telling of beads- using beads in a rosary in counting prayers

Sumary-
The poet Rabindranath Tagore advises the priests to give up their counting of beads, chanting, flowers, meditations, holy robe and incense. He urges them to stop worshiping of God in a scheduled corner of the temple. He says that God lives where the humble and down-trodden like tiller and path maker works in sun and rain.
He glorifies the life of the humble labourer and rejects the ascetic way of life.

  Read the following story carefully:
Once a woman was standing in the balcony of her house. She was holding her baby in her arms.
      As she was looking below, the baby slipped out of her hands. Down below there was a heavy traffic on the road. Buses, trucks, cars and scooters were passing by. The mother ran down for help. She cried but could not find her baby anywhere.
     People on the road wondered, “Where did the baby go?” They asked her to report to the police.
     A truck carrying cushions and pillows stopped near a shop. A baby’s cry came from the back of the truck. The baby was lying on the topmost cushion, sucking its thumb.
     “Look, a baby here!,” shouted the truck driver. “How did he get in?”. everyone wondered. Soon the baby was handed over to the police. The police took the baby to its mother. The mother was over joyed and she thanked the police.
      Who saved the baby’s life, the truck driver or the police? Surely, it was the unseen hand of God.
      We should always have faith in God and His goodness.
