·        The verbs in these sentences are in the past perfect tense. This tense is used to express an action completed in the past.
·        It is also used to express an action completed in the past before another action took place.
     Example-

                   b- The train had steamed off before we reached the station.

Now rewrite the following passage using the past perfect tense of the verbs given in the brackets.
  
 The train (arrive) at the station when I reached there. In fact, it was about to move again. The guard (show) the flag and the engine (give) the whistle. Pawan (get) down from the train. A porter (take) out the luggage. Pawan was standing with the luggage and wondering whether I (not receive) his telegram. He felt relieved to see me. I told him that I (leave) home well in time but a traffiv jam on the way (made) me late. Pawan informed me that Pinki (stay) back at Agra. The doctor (advise) her to take rest for a few days.

Notice Writing
A notice is meant to give information to people without caring to circulate it individyally. Notices are put up at a prominent place from where everybody can read. In school you may have a special place for a notice board. In resendential colonies a notice board is generally placed at the entrance gate. Notices may be inserted in newspapers too.

All notices have a few features in common. They –
·        have the name of institution or agency issuing a notice.
·        have a heading.
·        are clear, brief and complete.
·        are attractive.
·        are written in simple language giving all necessary information like the purpose, date, time and venue.
·        have the name and designation of the person circulating the notice.

The Great Stupa of Sanchi
The Great Stupas of Sanchi is an ancient Buddhist monument. It represents ancient Indian architecture. The Great Stupa was built in the 3rd century BCE by Emperor Ashok. It is also designated as UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a huge central hemispherical dome. It is surrounded by a railing. The entire structure is surrounded by a low wall, which is punctuated at four cardinal points by toranas (ceremonial gateways). All the elements are covered with relief sculpture depicting the events of Buddha’s life.
