Answer the following questions:
Q1.        How would our travel suffer in the absence of writing?
Ans- The machinery of buses, trains, ships and aeroplanes is very complicated and our engineers depend on engineering books and often refer to them to keep them in order. Thus our travel would suffer in the absence of writing.

Q2.        How does commerce depend upon writing?
Ans- Modern commerce is carried out with the help of cheques, account books and correspondence. Thus commerce depends upon writing.

Q3.        What did the Scythian send to the Persians? What did they want to tell the Persians?
Ans- The Scythians sent a bird, a mouse, a frog and five arrows to the Persians. They wanted to tell, “ O Persian! Can you fly like birds? Can you dig into the earth and hide yourselves like mice? Can you jump over water and wet lands like frogs? If you can’t do any of these, do not try to indulge in war with us. We shall attack you with our arrows and defeat you.”

Q4.        What does hieroglyphics mean?
Ans- Hieroglyphics is a kind of picture writing in which pictures or symbols are drawn to represent objects and ideas.

Q5.        Why is it difficult to learn Chinese?
Ans- It is difficult to learn Chinese because the number of characters run to several thousands in this language. Its characters do not represent sounds, but ideas. You will have to master almost as many characters as you have ideas.

Q6.        What is an alphabet? How is it a better system than picture writing?
Ans- An alphabet is a collection of letters. It is a better system than picture writing because each alphabet represents a sound and in most of the languages, the letters of alphabet are never more than fifty, but several thousand words can be made from them.

Q7.        In what direction are most languages written?
Ans- Most languages are written from left to right.

Q8.        What, according to the simple servant, was magical about the letter?
Ans- The simple servant buried the letter deep in the earth while eating mangoes from the basket but still the letter told about the missing mangoes to the master’s daughter. This was just magical about the letter!

Join the following sentences by using ‘not only’, ‘but also’/ ‘as well’

Punctuate the following sentences using /./,/?/;/ ‘/’ and capital letters, as necessary:
So, we see that in the absence of writing, our civilization would not only come to a stop, but within another half of a century, we would lose all that humanity has achieved in science and industry during the past thousand years, in about fifty years. We would have to learn the art of writing all over again.

Look at a currency note and find answers to these:
(1)  How many languages are there on the currency note?
      Ans- There are seventeen languages on the currency note.

(2)  How many pictures are there on the currency note?
      Ans- The front side of a currency note has the picture of Mahatma Gandhi and National Emblem while the reverse side has the image of Konark Sun Temple wheel (in ten rupees note).

(3)  How many signatures are there on the currency note?
      Ans- On the currency note, signature of Governer of Reserve Bank of India are there in Hindi and English Languages.

Find out what languages are written on a hundred rupee note. Write down the names.
