The Taj Mahal is the greatest glory of the Moghuls. It is a tomb built by Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Discuss with your teacher about the Stupas of Sanchi.
Find answers to the following questions:
(a)  Where is Sanchi?
Ans- Sanchi is a town in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh.

(b)  Who built these Stupas? Why?
Ans- Emperor Ashok built these Stupas. Some stupas were built to keep the relics Buddha and other buddhist monks. Other were built to propagate Buddhism.

(c)  What are they famous for?
Ans- Stupas are famous as Buddhist monuments.

Write about the Stupas of Sanchi using the following words-

Stupas of Sanchi are ancient Buddhist monuments. They represent ancient Indian arcitecture. The Great Stupa was built in the 3rd century BCE by Emperor Ashok. It is also designated as UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a huge central hemispherical dome. It is surrounded by a railing. The entire structure is surrounded by a low wall, which is punctuated at four cardinal points by toranas (ceremonial gateways). All the elements are covered with relief sculpture depicting the events of Buddha’s life.

Ans- The Great Pyramid wass built by the famous Egyptian king, Cheops. It took ten years to collect the material for its construction and another ten years to build it. Around ine lakh slaves were employed to build this pyramid. It is a solid structure which weighs about two and half tons. It is 500 feet high and acquires twelve acres of lamd as its base.

Collect more information and pictures of the Qutub Minar, Red Fort and the Golden Temple. Make a chart and write at least two or three sentences about each of them.


Qutub Minar
1-    Qutub Minar is a minaret in Qutub complex in Delhi.
2-    It is a 73 m tall tower of five storeys.
3-    It’s diameter is 47 feet at the base which reduces to 9 feet at the top of the peak.
4-    It contains a spiral staircase of 379 steps.

Red Fort
1-    Red fort is a historical fort in Delhi.
2-    Red fort is named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone.
3-    On 15th August 1947, first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru raised the national flag on its Lahore Gate.
4-    Each year, on India’s Independence Day, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red fort and delivers the speech which is broadcasted nationally.

Golden Temple
1-    The Darbar Sahib Gurudwara in Amritsar is known as Golden temple because it is plated with gold.
2-    It is built around a man-made pool (sarovar).
3-    It is sprictually the most significant shrine in the Sikh Religion.
4-    It is open boat of worship for all men and women, from all walks of life anfd faith.
