Some communities are modern and some are traditional.

This means that some communities still live the way they did hundreds of years ago and some have changed with time. can you help StarStruck to identify the modern communities? Write M for modern and T for traditional in the correct boxes.

Q. Give any two ways in which Geography influences the culture of people in a state.  (Except for food)
Ans-
(a) People of Gujarat and Rajasthan keep their head covered with turban or odhnis to protect themselves from the harsh sun.
(b) Trading is the occupation of people near the coasts because ships from other countries dock where they stay.

My Spacesuit the and flying saucer is a product of technology. It has helped me come here and live like you. How has technology influenced your culture? Give one example.
Ans- I look for the meaning of new words in my smartphone instead of looking for them in the dictionary.

Q. How does history influence culture? Give an example or explain in your own words, each of the following influences.

Invaders
 Ans- The British brought English language to India and today many Indians speak English.

Events and people
The freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak urged people to celebrate Ganpati festival as a community festival. Now it is celebrated as a community festival in many parts of the country.

Religious leaders of the past
Hinduism we follow today is based on the teachings of Rishi and Gurus in the past.

Q. Justify with examples to show how the geography of a place influences the food people eat.
Ans- People living in coastal regions where there is heavy rainfall and warm climate eat rice while in North India where there is moderate rainfall and cool climate in winter, people eat wheat as their staple food.  In Maharashtra where the weather is hot with less rainfall, people eat jowar and bajra.  This shows that the geography of a place influences the food people eat.

Section- C
Q. Captain Orb and StarStruck met a lady in Hawaii. They were surprised to see her wearing grass,  feathers and Jewelry of shells and beads.  Explain to them how climate and natural resources (minerals, forest/ plants,  animals, etc.)  have influenced her culture.

Ans- Clothing made of bark-cloth and grasses to keep them comfortable in hot and humid climate. (Tropical Climate)
Nuts, shells berries are used in Hawaiian Lei as they are available in plenty on the archipelago.
Feathers were used in clothing to designate one’s position in ancient time.
Tatoos on body indicate one’s position in society and abilities,
Q. We celebrate festivals of different cultures. Apart from Diwali,  we also celebrate Christmas.  What values do we learn from these festivals? Write in your notebook.
Ans- We celebrate Diwali and Christmas in our country. We learn following values from these festivals.

Ans- Following are various influence on the culture of our state-
1.   Diverse linguistic and religious ethnicities- Teachings of spiritual leaders like Kanaka Dasa, Basavanna, Vidyaranay, Raghavendra Swami etc.
2.   Rice, a staple food- Coastal regions’ climate is suitable for rice crop.
3.   Sambar and rasam as staple food as terrain and climate is suitable for crops of spices
4.   Coffee, a popular beverage as terrain and climate suitable for coffee plantation
5.   Modernization because of the influence of mass media
6.   Metropolitan culture in cities because of the influence of people from different regions and cultures.
7.   Spot of Interest for Tourists- Varied geography and long history.
8.   Historical and religious celebration e.g. Mysore Dasara, Bangalore Karaga
