 Section A
 Tick the maps that were made in the olden days.
Q. Name a material used for making maps before people started using paper.
Ans- People used leather or cloth for making maps before they started using paper.

Q. These are common symbols you see.  what do they mean?  right below the symbol.

This drawing is always seen on the maps. Complete it by filling in the directions. What is it called? Write in the space below.

If I was to make a map of a place, what colours should I use to make mountains, lakes, forest and desserts? Write in the space below and colour the square near to it.

Section B
Look at the map below and find the location of the various buildings and complete the sentences by filling in the blanks.

(i)           The house is on River Street, in the north-west.
(ii)          The library is between May Street and Main Street, in the north-east.
(iii)         The post office is near May Street, in the north.
(iv)         The school is on Main Street, in the west.
(v)          The police station is on Tree Street, in the south-east direction.
(vi)         If Captain Orb walks northwards from the police station, he can reach the River Mini.
(vii)       There are two lakes.  Lake Pure is in the south-west and Frozen Lake is in the south.
Draw a compass in the centre of the map and a tree in the east.

Below is an outline map of an island. Shade or mark and label your map to include the following:
a.   A desert
b.   Mountains
c.   A lake
d.   A plain
e.   A sea
f.     A city
g.   Houses
h.   A river
i.     A Village
j.     A road or railway that connects the city and village
Imagine and write the names for the city, village, mountains, plain, sea, lake, river and desert.
Add a compass rose in an empty corner of the map.

Q. What is a map?
Ans- A map is the drawing of a place on flat surface.

Q. How does a map help us?
Ans-  A map helps us in following ways:
1-   Locate a place
2-   Learn about a place
3-   Find address
4-   Find our way, if we are lost

Q. What are the various things shown on maps?
Ans- Various things shown on maps are :
1-   Landscape including mountain, desert , river, lake, forest, plain etc.
2-   Boundries of countries,states, cities and villages
3-   Man-made features like houses, industries
4-   Roads, railway track, Highways

Q. Name four natural and four man-made features shown on maps.
Ans- Four natural features-
1-   Mountain
2-   Desert
3-   River
4-   Plain
Four man-made features-
1-   International and State boundaries
2-   Hut, houses and buildings
3-   Roads
4-   Railway lines

Q. What is a boundary?
Ans- The boundary of a place is where one area ends and the other one starts.

Q. Give examples of things shown by symbols on maps.
Ans- Following are the examples of things shown by symbols on maps:
1-   Road
2-   Railway line
3-   Houses
4-   River or stream
5-   Tree
6-   Grass

Q. Give reasons
(a) Maps have symbols
Ans- Maps have symbols because it is not possible to draw or have pictures of everything in a small place.
(b) Maps have a key
Ans- A key explains what all the symbols and colours on the map mean.

Q. What colour usually reperesents:
 Water bodies, Man-made features, Planta or plains, Mountains or hills, Deserts
Ans-  Water bodies- Blue
          Man-made features- Red
          Plant or plains- Green
          Mountains or hills- Brown
          Deserts- Yellow

Q. What is a compass rose. Illustrate ine here:
Ans- Compass rose is a figure drawn on map to display orientation of cardinal directions and in-between points.
