Answer these questions:
Q.1 What do you think is a forest?
Ans- A large area covered by trees and undergrowth is called as Forest.

Q.2 Other than trees what all is there in a forest?
Ans- A forest is made up of abiotic and biotic components including animals, birds insects etc.

Q.3 What is the web of relationship in forest?
Ans- Plants, trees and animals in a forest depend on each other for food, security and habitat. This is called the web of relationship in a forest.

Q.4 Suryamani says, “If the forests are not there, we too will not remain.” Why so?
Ans- Forests provide us wood, medicines, fresh air and many other materials. They also cause rain, keep the climate cold and maintain balance in nature. Therefore, if forests are not there, we too will not remain.
Q.5 Why did Suryamani’s father move to town?
Ans- After the coming of contractor, it was not possible to pick a single leaf from forest. Suryamnai’s father could no longer support the family on the small land. So he moved to the town in search of work.

Q.6 The contractor did not allow Suryamani’s people to go into the forest. Why?
Ans- Contractor had achieved the contract to use forest resources. Therefore, he did not allow Suryamani’s people to go into the forest and collect things.

Q.7 Who do you think the forest belongs to?
Ans- Forest is our collective bank. We should take from it only as much as we need. We should not use up all our wealth.

Q.8 Give four examples where we use our common resources.
Ans- Four examples where we use our common resources are as follows:
(1) Building big dams on rivers
(2) Roads
(3) Drawing water, petrol or digging for minerals from under the ground.
(4) Commercial fishing from the sea

Q.9 What are the things that Suryamani want from the people of her community?
Ans- Suryamani wants following thing from people of her community:
(1) On festivals, people shou ld sing their own sons. They should not forget their music.
(2) They should enjoy wearing their traditional clothes.
(3) Children should learn about herbs, medicines and the art of making things from bamboo.
(4) Children should learn the language of school but must link it with their own language.

Ans- The land on which we grow one tin of seeds is called one tin of land.

Q.11 What could be done to save forests?
Ans- We should stop cutting trees and should plant more and more trees to make up for the loss already done.

Q.12 Explain in your own words why forests are important for people living in forests?
Ans- Forests are the source of livelihood for people living in forests. They get shelter, firewood, food, medicines, leaves and bamboo for making stuffs etc. from forest. Moreover, their sentiments are attached with forests.

Ans- This the map of India. It shows area covered with very thick and less thick forests.

B- Look for Orissa in the map. Is there a sea close to Orissa?
Ans- Yes, Bay of Bengal is on one side of Orissa.

C- Which are the states that have the sea on one side?
Ans- Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal have sea on one side.

D- How can you find out which states have very thick forests and which have less thick forests?
Ans- Areas marked with dark green colour are covered with very thick forests and the areas marked with light green colour are covered with less thick forests.

E- Which are the states around Mizoram?
Ans- Manipur, Assam and Tripura are the states around Mizoram.

(a) Right to Forest Act 2007
People who have been living in the forests for at least 25 years, have the right over the forest land and what is grown on it. They should not be removed from forest. The work of protecting forest should be done by their Gram Sabha.

(b) Lottery for Farming
   Lottery for farming is in practice in the hills of Mizoram. The land belongs to the whole village, not to separate people. So they take turns to do farming on different parts of the land. People get chance to choose the land by lottery.

(c) Jhoom Farming
In Jhoom farming, after cutting one crop, the land is left as it is for some years. Nothing is grown there. The bamboo or weeds which grow on that land are not pulled out. They are cut and burnt. The ash makes the land fertile. When the land is ready for farming it is lightly dug up, not ploughed and seeds are dropped on it. Weeds and other unwanted plants are also not pulled out, they are just cut. So that they get mixed with the soil. This helps in making the soil fertile.

(d) Cheraw Dance
Cheraw is a special dance performed after harvest in Mizoram. In this dance, people sit in pairs in front of each other, holding bamboo sticks on the ground. As the drum beats, the bamboos are beaten to the ground. Dancers step in and out of the bamboo sticks, and dance to the beat.
